Performance Tasks:
1) Making a "Tree Diagram" to outline the elements of a poem. As a class we will write a collective poem about a tree. Each student will be given a leaf template to write on. Depending on the class size groups may be created. Then on the leaves they will write descriptive words to use in their poem. On the branches of the tree sentences will be written to be used in the poem. Once that is finished the different elements will be put together and written on the trunk.
2) Find one poem written by a female Native American and one poem from a male Native American. Compare and contrast the different elements of the poems.
5) Students will be put into groups and asked to pick a Native American tribe. Each group will make a poster describing their tribes surroundings, clothing, lifestyle, culture, and traditions.
6) Students will have to put themselves in "moccasins" of a Native American child and write a short story about what they think life would be like in a tribe.
7) Students will be grouped and asked to choose one Native American celebration. Then the students will make a ceremonial headdress which one student will wear while the group is teaching the class about the celebration they chose.
8) Students will be asked to choose one influential Native American leader and write a poem based on what they find. They will incorporate their information within the poem. Also a photo of the leader will accompany the poem.
9) Students will listen to a poem being read to them. While it is being read to them they will be asked to make an illustration based on what they hear in the poem. Then the students will be asked to share their work if they wish.
10) As a class we will create our own Native American tribe. We will pick a name, our traditions, where we live, how we dress, etc. Each student will pick their own Native American name and what their role is in the tribe.
