Rationale:
To me the study of Native Americans and their culture is important because it teaches students about what life was like before we took over the land. I find their culture fascinating because there are so many different aspects to study. For example, different tribes worship different Gods, some perform different ceremonies and even hunt different animals. The Native Americans have a rich culture that spans many generations. There are even tribes around today scattered throughout the country.
I am teaching my 5th grade students about Native American poetry and culture because it combines the two subjects I enjoy, Language Arts and Social Studies. I find the use of nature and the different types of poems fascinating and fun to teach. This topic can make for an extensive lesson that is engaging as well as informational. Learning about poetry can be uninteresting subject but when it can be related to another subject it makes for a better lesson.
